Labour’s Lesley Griffiths will continue to represent Wrexham in the Senedd following the vote on May 6th. She was first elected in 2007 but still saw her majority cut by the Welsh Conservatives to just 1350 votes.
Speaking immediately after the results were announced, Welsh Conservatives’ candidate Jeremy Kent said that he had thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to knock on doors and “hear what people would like to see in Wrexham in the future” despite the result. Jeremy increased our vote share by 0.8% and picked up 31.4% of the vote overall.
Jeremy intends to retain a high profile in the area and to keep fighting for the people of Wrexham on those matters and issues which mean most to the people of this constituency.
Wrexham was one of the Conservative’s target seats before the election, as Welsh Labour’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic over the past 13 months was put under scrutiny and highlighted past failures of successive devolved Labour administrations here in Wales.
However, the success of the vaccine rollout across the UK contributed to Labour fighting off the Conservatives in many constituencies across Wales. Nevertheless, this was still Welsh Conservatives best performance in a Senedd election, as we returned to Cardiff with 16 MSs. This includes Gareth Davies who won the Vale of Clwyd and Sam Rowlands who was elected from the North Wales regional list.
Conservative Sarah Atherton MP continues to represent the area in Westminster and you can read more about what she has been upto recently on her website https://www.sarahatherton.org.uk/.
