Sam Rowlands MS for North Wales has called on the Welsh Government to back Wrexham’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2025.
Speaking in the Senedd, Mr Rowlands, Shadow Minister for Local Government, is urging them to back a campaign to support the Wrexham bid.
He said:
“North Wales continues to have a world class reputation for delivering exceptional events and being a world-renowned destination. In the last week we have now seen that Wrexham has been shortlisted to be named UK City of Culture 2025, along with seven other candidates across the UK.
“Wrexham has the most fantastic culture to offer, including Wrexham Football Club and the historic Racecourse Ground, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which has received UNESCO world heritage status, the cultural community centre of Ty Pawb, theatres, churches, the list is endless.
“Winning the UK City of Culture will not only have huge benefits to Wrexham, but the whole of North Wales, creating jobs, driving investment and delivering long-lasting benefits, putting Wrexham and North Wales on the international radar.
“I would welcome a Welsh Government statement outlining their support for Wrexham’s bid to secure the UK City of Culture title, and hear how they will work together with local authorities to ensure that Wrexham has the best chance possible to win the UK City of Culture Bid.”
Mr Rowlands added:
“This would be a wonderful way to help the area to recover from the damage caused by Covid. I urge the Welsh Government to get behind this bid which would deliver lasting benefits for all of Wales and would again put our country on the international radar.”
